To say that we had a variety of conditions would be an understatement. The format of the event was to hold two eliminations with the top 3 from each round moving onto a final race, winner take all, with no scores carrying forward. Twelve sailors arrived to rain and a strong Northeast breeze of 20-25 knots on Wednesday afternoon. Conditions continued to deteriorate as the rain turned into a monsoon and the breeze built to 25-35 during the first of two elimination races. One race was completed before the swimming began so racing was postponed until the next evening at 1600. A westerly breeze faded just as the racing was to begin with a faint seabreeze working in from Great Cranberry. After the elimination race a final, 'winner take all' race was held in a weak westerly with a ripping ebb current. Mia Brown won the start by staying up current of the line and dipping in the last 10 seconds to get away cleanly. She led with a huge margin around both turning marks and then the breeze quit. As most competitors got sucked out with the tide, Bob Johnstone and Ned Johnston kept their bows (and keels) pointing into the current to minimize surface area. They were both within 20 yds of the finish line when their slight breeze quit again and a zephyr of a seabreeze filled from their left and propelled the Commodore across the line first to seal his victory. Everyone else was thankful that the agony of light air was finally over and they retired and agreed to all be tied for 2nd place.
