A wonderful sea breeze started early in the day with a heading of about 175 degrees. Warmer air from the Manset shore began to mix and the RC changed from Q to D as it expected the hot land breeze to take over. Unfortunately, they guessed wrong and the beat was a bit lopsided with the left shift holding most of the way over to the Manset shore. A leeward gate was set off Bear Island and a short beat back to the finish resulted in some very tight finishes. John Henry sailing Dark Star led the way with Steve Madeira and Auriga close behind with Firefly nipping at their heels.
The second race was an windward leeward to Fleet Mark L and back. There were some warm shifts off the Manset shore yet, most competitors did a bear-away-set at the top for the long run back to the Shearwater. Many boats were overlapped coming into the finish and John Henry showed them how again nosing out Firefly, Humlen, Dakota and Tundra.
Congrats to David Rockefeller's Tundra Team for capturing the first series of 2010. It was wonderful to have so many boats out so early in the season. The starts were very tight and it is a sign of an exciting summer of competition with the July Series beginning on Monday. The Reath Trophy Pursuit Race is on tap tomorrow right after the picnic at the Fleet House. Race either spin or non-spin and enjoy the fun of being chased by the big dogs while we sail either around the Harbor or the Cranberries.
Three mercs came to the starting line off Sargent Head in a smoking Southerly seabreeze of 12-15 knots. Very tight starts and a long beat to windward to Mark Q, the Spurling Point Flasher made for a great opportunity to work on breezy sailing skills. Finishing while the IODs started and also finished made for some memorable moments as well. Congrats to Philip and Helen Koch who scored two bullets and a third while Parker Brown, Katherine Bienkowski and Bayard Roberts for had straight seconds to finish secong overall. Susan Thompson won the first race but had her hands full as the breeze blew even harder in the last two races and finished third in both of them.
RC again today was Solomon Krevans and Bill McNamara in the mark boat with Sue and Fran Charles on Shearwater.
