Today brought copious amounts of sunshine to Acadia and a gorgeous sea breeze filled in from the South at about 9:30am. Unfortunately, clouds formed in the west and overtook the skies at around noon. Many sailors who sailed upwind to get the angles and trim work fine tuned were stuck riding the tide back to the starting area. The race was off on time in a 5 knot southerly which really didn't get any better. Our first try at a mid-course gate course got many very favorable reviews and one negative review. It changed the game from an overall leg strategy of where to go geographically into a tactical race of control, freedom to tack and managing your lane. Leverage was reduced in half and the racing was much tighter with Gambler taking the gun  by inches over the hard charging Fly at the end of the first lap as the breeze completely gave it up. Many other finishes were in continuos overlap situations. An attempt at a second race was abandoned which, as usual, made the breeze return as boats returned to their moorings.

Interesting highlights in the scores as Auriga won the third tie breaker with Firefly as they had equal firsts, and seconds and we went to thirds to break it. Also, the youngstahs in Gosling won a tie break for July overall against Woodie to take 5th overall.

Good luck to our three teams in the World Championship and we are of course looking forward to everyone pitching in to help David S with the event logistical issues and Sandro V with the many boat issues with 20 boats on the line. Thanks to Tucker, Billy and Sue for helping out today.

Today offered a clearing afternoon with a light seabreeze filling the Harbor on a heading of about 185. The air was filled with moisture and eventually the breeze cranked in at 8-10 knots. Most competitors sought extra pressure holding on starboard towards Great Cranberry after a very tight start which was absolutely nailed by the Gambler. Again downwind most sailors held on starboard after setting at mark Q to favor the left side on the slide as well. On the second lap the warm pressure from Manset began to build across to the race area and the left corner didn't have the big benefit which it had on the first beat. Gambler had a huge lead and could simply sail conservatively to victory while the pack snarled astern.

Our second race was a tight first beat to Q again. Auriga had a nice boat end start with good speed and a big jump on the rest of the fleet who were off by almost a full length or more. The left was beginning to lose pressure but the Madeira boat stayed on top of the fleet as they continued in towards Grt Cranberry. Black Seal made a cross by working back to the center. It was a premonition of the warm Manset breeze pushing out beyond the middle of the race track. Port gybe poles kept going forward as the Manset breeze filled on the run. This made the west gate mark favored and the majority of the fleet tacked as they rounded it. The breeze freshened more as the fleet remained tight up to Cow Ledge. The RC squared the run over to Rice Point for the final leg and a few tight overlapped finishes ensued. Auriga took the gun and the day with Firefly, Puff and Black Seal right behind them.

Sue and Fran Charles were on Shearwater today with young Liam Higgins helping out. Liam was dieing to see IODs race as he is in first year Mercuries this year. He jumped in a merc for the second race today. Tucker Charles was in the mark boat along with Jeff Walls from the MDIslander. Jeff has been giving us great coverage and will have great pictures in next week's edition. We should all be subscribing to show our support for his interst in promoting the sailboat racing game at the NE Harbor Fleet.

Reminder to send in an entry for next Saturday's Hospice Regatta. Follow the link off the Fleet Home Page. It is a very important and worthwhile cause which everyone should be helping out with. Racing will end in time to get to the lobster bake at Dysarts right after awards at 5:30.

 July 5th

Fickle and almost nonexistent breezes out in the Great Harbor drove the IODs up into Somes Sound for a pair of races in a 5-9 kt breeze which oscillated between 200 and 210 degrees. The tide was flooding hard and current relief was found on the right side for 2 out of 3 windward legs while the runs went by quite quickly with the fleet pointed directly at the gates. Courses were WL twice around with gates at the top and bottom. The Somes Sound sea breeze was retreating during the second race and the race course was shortened at Acadia Mountain. Firefly went head to head with the guys and gals on Gambler at every turn in the first race. If one went right, the other went left. The finish line was controlled by Firefly as Gambler was too close to leeward to break through. The Gambler took the second race as well as the day as they started aggressively  and controlled their own destiny. Auriga had a remarkable comeback after checking out the fine boat work at Jock Williams' yard on the far right. They hit the side hard after giving the rest of the Fleet a big jump at the start.

Stew Craig and Bill McNamara worked the mark boat while Fran Charles and Reguli Granger managed duties on Shearwater. Dave Grasso helped sort out some electrical problems on the RC boat while racing was going on which apparently were caused by some loose connections on one battery.
